Montessori Toys Singapore: What To Buy At Every Age (0–5 Years)

Montessori Toys Singapore: What To Buy At Every Age (0–5 Years)

Every Singapore parent has been there. You're standing in a toy store (or more likely, scrolling at midnight) trying to figure out whether this toy is actually good for your child or just good at looking good in the box.

Montessori toys cut through the noise. They're open-ended, age-appropriate, made from natural materials where possible, and designed to let your child lead the play. No batteries, no flashing lights, no one right way to use them.

Here's what we recommend at every age — and why.

0–1 Years: Sensory first, everything else second

At this age your baby is learning through touch, sound and movement. The best toys are simple, safe, and stimulating without being overwhelming.

Look for: wooden rattles, soft sensory balls, high-contrast black and white cards, and simple grasping toys. Natural materials like wood and organic cotton are ideal because everything goes in the mouth.

Avoid: anything with small parts, loud electronic sounds, or overstimulating light shows. These don't help development — they just keep babies distracted.

1–2 Years: Movement and cause-and-effect

Toddlers at this age are obsessed with figuring out how things work. Push toys, stacking toys, and simple shape sorters are perfect. They're also starting to imitate adult behaviour — which is why play kitchens and simple pretend play sets work beautifully.

Our picks from SARVA: the Baby Tambu, wooden stacking toys, and push toys that encourage walking and coordination.

2–3 Years: Open-ended building and creativity

This is where open-ended play really shines. Two and three year olds want to build, create, knock down and build again. Blocks, magnetic tiles, and simple art materials give them the freedom to direct their own play — which is exactly what Montessori philosophy encourages.

The key is to avoid toys with one specific outcome. A puzzle has one solution. Wooden blocks have infinite solutions. The second type grows with your child far longer.

3–4 Years: Problem solving and fine motor skills

At this age children are ready for slightly more complex challenges — puzzles with more pieces, construction sets that require more dexterity, and early literacy and numeracy activities.

This is also when activity books and doodle mats come into their own. The Wipe & Clean activity books are a SARVA favourite for this age — reusable, educational, and genuinely engaging for kids who are starting to recognise letters and numbers.

4+ Years: STEM, imagination and collaboration

Older toddlers and preschoolers are ready for toys that challenge them to think creatively and work through problems. This is where Clixo really shines — magnetic, flexible building pieces that can become anything a child imagines, from a dinosaur to a flower to a spaceship.

The best toys at this age are the ones your child can use alone or with others, in different ways every time they pick them up.

A note on toy rotation

One of the best things you can do regardless of your child's age is rotate toys. Keep 4–6 toys out at a time and store the rest. When you bring stored toys back out, they feel new again — and your child engages more deeply with fewer choices. Less overwhelm, more focus, better play.
